System of the Remnant: Parallel Economic and Financial Projections in a Technotronic Future

Summary

This briefing document synthesizes and expands on the Remnant Financial System—a set of parallel economic and financial configurations that exist alongside, in response to, or in opposition to the technologically-driven Emergent Financial System. While policy debates often assume a wholesale replacement of traditional money with digital, identity-anchored, and programmable alternatives (such as Central Bank Digital Currencies or CBDCs), the research demonstrates that a diverse and durable Remnant will not only persist but increasingly decouple from the dominant order. The core outcome of this synthesis is a typology of eight distinct Remnant population configurations analyzed across three structural dimensions: motive of separation, technological tools, and mode of interaction with the Emergent Financial System. The analysis forecasts a structural bifurcation over the next two decades, where the Emergent and Remnant systems serve progressively distinct populations with diminishing common ground.
